In the middle of the steppes of Asia, on the foothills of the Himalayas, there are people who converse in German as a matter of course. The name of their village is ”Rotfront”, a legacy of Stalin. Half of the villagers stem from Germany and almost all of them are members of the Mennonite religious community, which has its origins in East Friesia. They speak low German, and the roots of their culture are not only reflected in the taste of their liver sausage. Several of them now live in Germany, others wish to remain in Kirghiz. Between the Himalayas and the ”Weserbergland”, the film attempts to answer questions on distance and homeland, nostalgia and its limitations – questions extending far beyond the theme of ”resettlement”.
