The world feeds from just a handful of crops. Half the world´s population survives on rice, wheat, corn and potatoes. The past few years have shown how vulnerable both humans and animals are to diseases such as AIDS and mad cow disease. To what extent are uncontrollable epidemics and pests threatening the world´s staple crops? Just how safe is our food? The past El Niño event has been the strongest recorded in history. What does climate change mean for food security? The only thing that we can be sure of is that our crops and the diseases that affect our crops will change with the climate. Monoculture makes the world´s food supply ever more vulnerable to these changes. What causes mono-culture and who profits from it? In order to search for answers to these questions we undertake a journey that follows the traces of the potato from it's origin in the Andes to the potato plains of Idaho in the United States. |
